In 1965 , the Mint continued the tradition of offering the so-called "long" proof sets for sale. These sets were similar to the normal short proof sets, but also contained the R1 and R2 gold coins and were housed in very distinct red leatherette cases. Many catalogue writers warn that huge numbers of the gold coins were stripped over the years and complete sets in their original red cases are now becoming scarce. It will in fact be quite difficult for prospective buyers to source the full series of 19 sets from 1965 to 1983. Despite this scarcity, these sets remain undervalued by collectors and currently sell for only slightly more than the bullion value of two gold coins.

Even at bullion prices, assembling a complete set will require a substantial investment as the complete set contains 19 R2 gold coins (7.32g of gold per coin) and 19 R1 gold coins 9 3.66g of gold ). The total gold content of the complete set is 208.62g, which is slightly more than the amount of gold in 6 ½ Krugerrands.
