Although the sovereign circulated widely in South Africa, most South Africans were not acquainted with Saint George, and the coin appeared to be of a strange design. The true symbolic meaning of the design is beautiful and its origin dates back to the time of the Roman Empire, Diocletian.
King George V features on the obverse of the sovereign for all the coins minted in South Africa, and can also be distinquished by the letters "SA" struck below the dragon on the reverse side of the gold half and full sovereigns.
