THE UNION BUILDINGS FORM THE OFFICIAL SEAT OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT AND ALSO HOUSE THE OFFICES OF THE PRESIDENT OF SOUTH AFRICA. THE IMPOSING BUILDINGS ARE LOCATED IN PRETORIA, ATOP MEINTJIESKOP AT THE NORTHERN END OF ARCADIA, CLOSE TO THE HISTORIC CHURCH SQUARE.

In 1909 Herbert Baker was commissioned to design the Government Building of the Union of South Africa (Which was formed on the 31 May 1910) in Pretoria. Pretoria was to become the administrative centre for the new government. In November 1910 the cornerstone of the Union Building was laid.

Description:

In May 1994, Nelson Mandela's Presidential inauguration takes place at the Union Buildings in Pretoria .  With about 100 000 celebrants on the lawns in front of the building, it was the largest gathering of international leaders ever held in South Africa. The ceremony was televised and broadcast internationally. In his inaugural speech Mandela called for a 'time of healing' and states that his government will fight against discrimination of any kind. He pledged to enter into a covenant to build a society in which all South Africans, Black and White, could walk tall without fear, assured of their rights to human dignity 'a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world'. - source:www.sahistory.org.za
