DESCRIPTION:
The UNESCO Man and the biosphere coin series features the Waterberg Biosphere in the Limpopo Province. This Pristine wilderness area is an important water catchment area for the arid region. Preservation of the water resources was one of the main reasons for establishing the biosphere reserve.
The ecosystem consists of different veld types of which the sour Bushveld and mixed Bushveld are the two dominant savanna vegetation types as well as the Waterberg Moist Mountain Bushveld.
This sterling-silver R2, featuring the UNESCO logo as a privy mark, captures the open landscape of the WBR. The Seven Sisters Mountain range, an iconic feature of, and the gateway to the Waterberg, is shown with clouds gathering above in the background.
A greater kudu bull (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) is featured standing in the water at the rivers edge. In the background, the wild syringa (Burkea africana) is shown. Various species of animals that were prevalent within the area have been reintroduced, like the hartebeest, kudu, eland,buffalo and elephants.

The Marakele National Park (Marakele is a Tswana name meaning 'place of sanctuary') has the largest colony of endangered Cape griffon (Gyps coprotheres) in Africa, also known as the Cape vulture or Kolbe's vulture, more than 800 breeding pairs.
The overall African population of these magnificent birds endemic to southern Africa has steadily declined since the 1980s. Various threats have been identified, such as the loss of habitat and the decrease in the amount of large carion, poisoning and the unstable harvesting for traditional practices and the collision with electrical cables which are suspended between electricity pylons.
