In celebration of the rich diversity of the Kogelberg Biosphere, the South African Mint has, for the first time, launched a new colour range to showcase its staggering beauty. The range contains four sterling-silver 1oz crowns: two depicting the flora and two depicting the bird life of the unique U N E S C O Biosphere Reserves.
2016 R 10 CAPE ROCKJUMPER (Chaetops frenatus)
This R10 coin features the Cape Rockjumper endemic to the mountain fynbos situated on the windswept rocky slopes of the Western and Eastern Cape of South Africa. A male Cape Rockjumper, with its dark rufous-red breast and belly, is featured on the coin, standing on a mountain ridge overlooking the ocean. The obverse of this coin features a map of South Africa indicating the location of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve in the Western Cape Province.
2017 R 10 BLUE CRANE (Gras Paradisea)

2018 R 10 WHITE-BACKED NIGHT HERON (Gorsachius Leuconotus)
This R10 coin features the White-Backed Night Heron, a species of medium-sized heron of the family Areidae. Nocturnal by nature, they can be found living individually or in pairs. The most recognisable feature of the White-backed night Heron is the pale bare skin, from white to pale yellow or green surrounding its large eyes. The obverse features a map of South Africa indicating the location of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve.
2018 R 10 YELLOW-THROATED SANDGROUSE (Pterocles Gutturalis)
This R10 coin features the Yellow-throated Sandgrouse, a species of bird of the Pteroclidae family, which is mainly found in the savanna grasslands where it breeds and feeds. The Yellow-throated Sandgrouse is a monogamous bird, the bird breeds with one partner for the rest of its life. It builds its nest on the ground with twigs, leaves and straw.
