DESCRIPTION:

In February 1979, the Government of Canada authorised the Royal Canadian Mint to establish a special coin programme and, on September 5. 1979, the Gold Maple Leaf was introduced. This set of four platinum commemorative proof coins celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Maple Leaf's entry into the market.

The reverse of the coin is designed by Walter Ott and depicts a Canadian maple leaf with the inscriptions "Canada" at the top. "9995" on either side of the leaf and "fine platinum", the weight and "platine pur"  appear at the bottom of the coin. The obverse of the Maple Leaf features the effigy of the Queen and the legend "Elizabeth II" at the top. The nominal value and the date are inscribed at the bottom.

DESCRIPTION:

The Polar Bear is the largest land carnivore in the world with adult males weighing as much as 600 kilograms and measuring up to 2.75 metres in length. It is an excellent swimmer capable of covering vast distances across open water and, when diving, can remain under water for over a minute.

The design on the reverse by Robert Bateman show the polar bear in its arctic habitat. Four different scenes are depicted: a mother and cub at the entrance to their ice den, a polar bear traversing a gravel river bed, a polar bear resting at the waters edge and a polar bear swimming.
