Description:

In celebration of the 100 Year Anniversary of the Union Buildings, the South African Mint Company (RF) (PTY) Ltd and the South African Post Office have issued a set of commemorative coins and stamps respectively. This unique collectors' set combines the proof quality R2 sterling silver crown, the proof quality R2 circulation coin and the 20 stamps which depict various architectural features and details of the Union Buildings.

Designed by Sir Herbert Baker the Union Buildings was completed in 1913. Originally built to house the entire Public Service for the Union of South Africa, it was then the largest building in the country and possibly the largest known construction work undertaken in the southern hemisphere at that time.

The building which is approximately 285 metres long, was constructed with light coloured sandstone. It is built in a semi-circle design with an east and a west wing. These wings represented the union of a formerly divided nation. Also found on the grounds are the Delville Wood War Memorials, which pay tribute to South African troops who died during the First World War.

Today it is still the official seat of government and houses the offices of the President of South Africa, but it has also become the site of many auspicious celebrations and historical events. It is well known for the famous Women's March on 9th August 1956, when 20 000 women of all races gathered to represent a petition against the carrying of passes to the then prime minister J G Strijdom. The day is commemorated every year at the Union Buildings as National Women's Day. Significant historical events like these and others, have firmly established the Union Buildings as the site where significant national events, such as presidential inaugurations, national days and the presentation of
National Orders are celebrated.
