Description:
2009 MARITIME HISTORY - DROMMEDARIS / SAÕ GABRIEL
The sterling silver R2 Crown depicts the merchant ship Drommedaris in which Jan van Riebeeck set off from the Netherlands in December 1651 to establish a halfway station in the Cape of Good Hope (formally The Cape of Storms). At the Cape the Dutch East India Company (VOC) ships could replenish their water and food supplies on their way to and from the Far East. The expedition consisted of five ships: the Drommedaris, the Reijger, the De Goede Hoop, the Walvisch and the Oliphant. The coin design includes the expedition's route map to the Cape of Good Hope. The Drommedaris arrived at Table Bay on 6 April 1652.
2010 MARITIME HISTORY - R M S SCOT / R M S WINDSOR CASTLE The R M S Scot and the R M S Windsor Castle III are featured on the 2010 Tickey and the R2 Crown respectively. These two vessels represent an era of mail steamships, playing a major role in South African History by conveying mail, equipment, immigrants and well-known personalities to and from our country during the boom days of gold and diamond discoveries and the resulting industrial development.
2011 MARITIME HISTORY - R M S SCOT / R M S WINDSOR CASTLE In 2011 the R M S Queen Mary 2 features on the R2 Crown and represents the modern age of luxury transatlantic ocean liners. The heavy lift cargo ship, the S A van de Stel, is depicted on the Tickey. In the mid 1960's, the S A van de Stel, became part of the South African Maritime Corporations (Safmarine) cargo enterprise.
