Due to the acute shortage of coinage and the need to purchase provisions, a mint was established in the field at Pilgrims rest. A hand press was improvised and discs of practically 24 carat gold manufactured. The coins were struck from one pair of dies only, with features specific to genuine coins. Genuine coin weights are known to vary from 7,544 to 8,508 grams and flutes in the milling between 72 and 79.
