1c 1965 AFRIKAANS

The 1c coin was only released to the public in 1966. The 1c coin was in fact the last of the series to be released on the 10th May 1966. No Afrikaans language 1c coins were therefore required for either the proof sets or for circulation purposes in 1965. Apparently a total of 1031 of the Afrikaans language 1c coins were minted. The mintage figure was estimated to be less in the March 1966 issue of the Bickels Coin and Medal News in which it stated: "Another high-priced item on the market is the rare 1965 1c coin struck in Afrikaans with an estimated mintage of less than 300, they are already rocketing to R35 or more."

Hern’s catalogue lists as 30 to 50

50c 1965 ENGLISH

Willie van As was President of the Traansvaal Numismatic Society and also the Bullion Officer at the Mint at the time. He therefore had a good insight into the mintage figures and reasons for minting particular coins. According to Willie van As, the mintage for the English language coin was only 20. Documents found in the National Archives of South Africa indicated that the Proclamation, approved the designs for the new coins. Based on this Proclamation and the statement of Willie van As, the most likely reason for the minting of the 1965 English 50c coin was for the purposes of proclaiming the design.

Hern’s catalogue lists as 85 to 120

R1 1965 AFRIKAANS

As with the 1965 50c English coin, no Afrikaans language R1 coins were required for the 1965 proof sets or for circulation ( the first circulation coins, dated 1966, were only released to the public during March 1966). A total of 120 of these coins were struck and they are mostly in the so called VIP proof sets. On the 3rd December 1964, a ceremony was held at the South African Mint to mark the official striking of the first of South Africa's new coinage series by the then Minister of Finance, Dr T.E.Donges.
