2011 THE KRUGERRAND & SOVEREIGN PROOF GOLD SET When the British annexed the Transvaal after the Anglo Boer War in 1900, the unavailability of coinage became an issue and in 1923, using premises of the old Z A R Mint production of coins began for usage in the Union of South Africa. In 1967, a new South African gold coin called the Krugerrand was struck containing exactly one troy ounce of gold depicting Paul Kruger, the then President of the Z A R.
