Description :
Only one language legend proof coins were officially issued by the South African Mint. The opposite language coins do exist in prooflike condition from 1966 to 1969. Often these coins were struck by the families of the Presidents at special ceremonies at the mint. No official mintage figures exist for these coins, but the number is very small and therefore very rare.
The initials T.S. on these coins are those of Tommy Sasseen.Tommy Sasseen's most important contribution in die-sinking is the nickel coin series. Less well known is that he was instrumental in the manufacturing of the dies for the first Krugerrands in 1967.
Tommy Sasseen was the Chief Die-Sinker of the South African Mint for the nickel coin series that was being introduced at that time as the Republic of South Africa's new circulation coinage. die-sinking is the art of preparing dies for stamping the coins. This is a rare skill as the die-sinker must be a good artist, but also possess excellent technical abilities. A good understanding of the behaviour of metals and the manufacturing of dies is essential to ensure that a good reproduction of the planned design is achieved on the coins
As a Chief-die sinker, TommySasseen was managing the entire Die department of the Mint when the new coin series had to be minted. This department was responsible for the manufacturing and hardening of the new dies.Special care had to be taken with the hardening process as this was the first time nickel blanks were used at the mint.
