Description:

The 1902 gold Veldpond also known as the "Pilgrim's Rest Coin" is a remarkable coin struck by the boers on the run from the overwhelming British forces on a makeshift mint set up in the veld in the remote region of Pilgrims Rest in the northeastern Transvaal(now known as Mpumalanga). The coin, about the size of a sovereign, precedes the first World War German East African pieces (notes and coin) and the "Tabora Pound" which were struck under similar circumstances following invasion by the British Colonial forces and their allies. For many numismatists, the Veld Pond is the ultimate of South African coins because of its remarkable history.

THE VELD POND FROM THE Z A R PERIOD COULD SELL ON AUCTION FOR SUBSTANTIALLY HIGHER PRICES DUE TO BEING EXTREMELY RARE AND BECAUSE OF ITS HISTORICAL VALUE AND LOW MINTAGE, IT IS THEREFORE REGARDED AS UNIQUE AMONGST COLLECTORS...A BEAUTIFUL SET THAT INCLUDES A STUNNING COMMEMORATIVE GOLD VELDPOND MEDALLION

KRUGER COINAGE - 1892 TO 1902 ZAR ISSUES

In 1890/91 a lease was granted to the Nationale Bank of the ZAR to establish a State Mint in Pretoria. The coins were to be identical in weight with the prescription of the British Coinage Act of 1870. President Kruger, anxious to get the new coins in circulation had placed orders for coins dated 1892 with the Berlin Imperial Mint.

The first consignment of pounds, half pounds and crowns arrived with two shafts on the wagon and similar sized wheels as can be seen in the coat of arms on the reverse of the coins. This caused quite a stir and subsequent 1892 pounds and crowns were issued with correct single shaft wagons and the correct size of wheels, small in the front and larger wheels at the back. Futher consternation was caused by the Berlin 1892 issues. As was customary, the designer Otto Schultz had placed his initials (O.S.) below on the shoulder area of the bust of Paul Kruger as can be seen on the obverse

of the coins, only on the double shaft issues, which is Afrikaans for ox. The single shaft pound and the double shaft crowns are the scarcer items.

Paul Kruger's legacy lives on when one considers that his portrait is represented on the back of every single Krugerrand from when it was first introduced in 1967, 56 years ago. Paul Kruger would be 200 years old on the 10 October 2025.

Gold has been a store of value for thousands of years, and has been trusted by man to be a hard asset with an intrinsic value that is recognised worldwide. In some countries at certain times, the need to own gold may be overwhelming. At other times, it may be less so. Although the value of gold can go up or down, over the centuries millions of people in almost every country have benefited from owning gold at the right time. Krugerrands are traded internationally and are regarded as a sound asset in times of uncertainty.
