The design and name of the Krugerrand was based on historical coins of South Africa. The obverse depicts the bust of President Paul Kruger who was President of the ZAR, the previous Transvaal province of South Africa, when the Witwatersrand gold was discovered in 1886. The design of the obverse depicts a prancing springbok, a well known South African antelope.

The Krugerrand is unique in that it is legal tender or a valid trading coin without a monetary face value. The face value is 1oz or fractions of it and is traded as such.
