Replica - 1898 "Double 9" Overstrike Pond
The "Double 9" was the last coin issued by the Suid Afrikaansche Republic (ZAR) prior to the Boer War. The mint in Pretoria had begun coinage in 1893 and struck coins on a regular basis through 1900. At the time the ZAR State Mint struck coins but had their coin dies made in Germany. As usual, the mint ordered its 1899 coin dies from the Royal Prussian Mint in Berlin.
Britain's Rivalry with Germany, and German support of the ZAR's independance, was a major factor in British irritation over the ZAR's independent coinage. In October of 1899, when the Anglo-Boer War broke out, British troops saw the opportunity to help delegitimize the ZAR by seizing its German-made coin dies on their way to Pretoria. If the British could keep the ZAR from striking 1899 dated coins it would help to prove that the ZAR was not an independent country.
Due to the 1899 dies having been intercepted by the British, the 1898 dies had to be reused. To mark the re-opening of the mint in 1899 the mintmaster had 130 of these 1898 pounds over-stamped with a small punch by an official of the mint with the small figures "99". These coins became extremely rare, and have become highly sought after historic coins.
The bust of President Paul Kruger was modelled by Otto Schultz for the first ZAR pounds that were struck in 1892. The same bust of President Paul Kruger was used once again in 1967 to introduce the first Krugerrands to the world.
