President Burgers realised that some of this gold could be used for providing the Republiek's own gold coins. The Burgers Pond became the first official coinage issued by the Republiek. The Bust of the bearded President encircled by his name and the date "1874" was depicted on the obverse of the gold One Pond. On the reverse the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek's coat of arms was featured.

In 1873, the refined gold was delivered to Ralph Heaton and Sons in Birmingham for the production of 837 pounds. Sixteen dies and two punches were manufactured by the modeller and engraver of the Royal Mint,  and the first 695 Burgers Ponde were received on 25 July 1874. Various patterns in bronze and aluminium were also struck.

It was only in 1944 that a Mr Ellis of Johannesburg noticed a difference in the striking of the Burgers Pond. The following was noted: FINE BEARD; Burgers beard shows one thick front point, then two larger and thinner points followed by 3 short points. The front of the beard is wavy and the impression of the effigy is very sharp. The burr on the edge of the obverse of the coin shows a double ring.

COARSE BEARD: The beard shows four thick points with the front pair being shorter.
The beard is heavier and flatter. The burr is on the edge of the reverse and in addition, the eight in the date "1874" appears to be a double "8".

To commemorate the Burgers Pond two 1/4 oz replica medallions, one of the fine beard pond, and one of the coarse beard pond, have been minted. These two replica medallions are packaged together with a 1/4 oz Krugerrand coin.

During 1890 - 91 , a lease was granted to the Nationale Bank of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (Z A R) to establish a State Mint in Pretoria. The coins were to be identical in weight with the prescription of the British Coinage Act of 1870. President Paul Kruger, anxious to get the new coins in circulation had placed orders for coins dated 1892 with the Berlin Imperial Mint. Kruger wanted to use the coins to gain popularity in the 1892 elections.

This 1892 replica set minted by the Berlin Mint, commemorates these unique coins namely the 5 shilling gold (minted in 22ct gold and weighing 39.94 grams), the 5 shilling that had been minted in silver at the time (initially minted in two varieties - the single shaft and the double shaft), and the 1 penny that was struck in bronze at the time , and was the proof version which  has a mintage of 10 - 20 only, struck in copper for this set.

Paul Kruger wanted to give the Post Master General a special gift for his contribution to the development of a postal system in the new Z A R. He authorised the minting of only one 5 shilling gold coin dated 1892 with his portrait on the obverse, and on the reverse, and engraved a short sentence - and awarded it to Isaac van Alphern, Post Master General of Z A R in recognition of his services on the 5 September 1895.

 Description:

The fist consignment of pounds, half pounds and crowns arrived with two shafts on the wagon and equal sized front and rear wheels in the coat of arms, as the Berlin Imperial Mint had used the image of a Continental European wagon instead of the Voortrekker wagon.  This caused quite a stir and subsequent 1892 pounds and crowns were issued with the correct single shaft wagons and sized wheels.
