Description:

SINCE THE ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK'S INDEPENDANCE IN 1852, THE LANDLOCKED ZAR HAD ASPIRATIONS OF A LINK TO A NON-BRITISH HARBOUR AND RAILWAY LINE FROM PRETORIA TO DELAGOA BAY (MAPUTO) IN MOZAMBIQUE WOULD ENSURE ECONOMIC FREEDOM

It was only after the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, under the leadership of President Paul Kruger, that the Z A R got its own railway system. A jointly owned Dutch and South African railway company ( Nederlandsche Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg-Maatschappij or N Z A S M ) was granted the concession for building and managing most of the Z A R railway network, including the Delagoa Bay line. By the end of the 19th Century, N Z A S M had built, operated and administered 1147 kilometers of railway line, dozens of building and stations as well as rolling stock, thus influencing the economic development of the Z A R.
