Description:
The South African Mint Company was nominated Guest of Honour at the 39th Berlin Money Fair 2010. To mark this special honour , the 2010 Krugerrand Launch Set contains a 1 oz proof Krugerrand with the mint mark of the "Berlin Bear" together with the wording "Berlin". Also included in this set, is the fine silver medallion which was co-designed by the South African Mint and the Berlin State Mint. When the Z A R (Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek) was established and gold and diamonds were discovered in this new Republic, a massive influx of treasure seekers took place, and a variety of different currencies in circulation became a problem. So much wealth required a central banking system, and in due course a Mint Act provided for coinage similar to that of Great Britain.
Facing an upcoming election , President Kruger pushed for coinage before the new Pretoria Mint was completed and contracted to have the first issue of new Z A R coins (1892) designed and manufactured by the then Imperial Berlin Mint. It is a fact that the modern world-renowned Krugerrand is the 'grandchild' of the Kruger Ponds struck by the Imperial Mint.
The obverse of the fine silver medallion depicts a replica ('R') of the original reverse design by engraver Otto Schultz of the Imperial Mint. The Republiek's pond and half pond featured the Z A R's coat of arms and the Dutch motto 'Eendraght Maakt Magt" (Unity Makes Strength).
Berlin received city rights in 1230, and in 1701 it became the capital of Prussia. In 1871, Berlin became the capital of Germany. The Brandenburg Gate, as shown on the reverse, is a famous icon of this city and a symbol of Germany. In 1280 the image of the bear appeared on the city's new great seal, and soon afterwards, the bear became the main symbol of the city, appearing on seals, coat of arms, flags and shields up to present times. Although permission had been granted to build a mint in Pretoria for the Boer Republiek (ZAR), President Paul Kruger, who was in the middle of a re-election campaign, hurriedly arranged for the ZAR's new coinage to be designed and manufactured at the Imperial Mint in Germany so that the first issue could be ready in 1892 in time for the elections.
