Interestingly, during the ceremonial first striking on 3 July 1967 of the iconic Krugerrands, there were only 5 people present namely Dr and Mrs Diederichs, Victor Lodder (Secretary of the Treasury) and Koos and Adele Groenewald (Director of the Mint). The few visitors at the mint, indicate that the potential of the coin was probably not realised at the time. In the years following that, many Mints adopted the 1 ounce, and then later, South Africa introduced the fractional Krugerrands .
Although gold Krugerrand coins have no face value, they are considered legal tender in South Africa by the South African Reserve Bank Act (SARB) of 1989
