COERT STEYNBERG'S ICONIC DESIGN

The magnificent launch of the 50th Anniversary of the Krugerrand included an exhibition of the original drawings of the springbok by the mint artist Coert Steynberg. Six contemporary South African artists also captured the, history-changing events, of the iconic introduction of the Krugerrand into the global marketplace that made up the exhibition of artworks. The exhibition was first shown at the World Money Fair

in Berlin in February 2017.

DESCRIPTION:

The striking of the first gold Krugerrand on 3 July 1967 at the South African Mint by Dr Nico Diedricks, the President of South Africa at the time, took place with little ceremony. The Krugerrand dominated the world's coin market over the next nine years.

The 1967 1oz vintage 22-carat coin was manufactured using reproduced dies from the original tooling used to manufacture the first Krugerrands in 1967.

The 50th anniversary privy mark, the distinctiveness of the 2017 Krugerrand family pays homage to the unrivalled legacy of the original

coin.
