DESCRIPTION:
The Krugerrand was the first gold coin to be denominated in ounces of pure gold: first year of issue was 1967, the fractional coins were introduced (1/2oz, 1/4oz, or 1/10oz) in 1980. The Krugerrand can be bought from dealers and banks globally. Buying and selling Krugerrands internationally is easy. Krugerrands usually carry only a small premium (mark-up) over the value of their gold content - unlike collector or numismatic coins where the value is normally
dependent on their rarity and condition.
Paul Kruger
Paul Kruger was responsible for the introduction of Africa's first legal coinage on which the present day Krugerrand is based.
Paul Kruger, a resilient and resourceful leader, was elected president of the then ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK ( South African Republic )in 1883, and was re-elected in 1888, 1893 and 1898. The Republic was situated in the old Transvaal area (today called Gauteng) and the Witwatersrand is located in this region. The discovery of this rich main reef in 1886 changed the history of South Africa by introducing an era of unprecedented expansion with many opportunities. People came from all over the world in search of gold and riches, and to work in the mines established from these discoveries.
