”The Long walk to Freedom” (1994). The title in itself implies a pilgrimage, or long walk to reach a goal of “freedom”, a value inherent in humane and democratic societies. The “walk” or pilgrimage that Mandela undertook was primarily politically driven to attain or reach a “position or place” of freedom to be able to live and speak freely in an open society.
A survey was done amongst a hundred adult tourists visiting Robben Island, World Heritage Site, in Cape Town, during the month of June 2004 to ascertain whether they were motivated to visit the Island after reading Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, “Long walk to freedom” in order to follow in the footsteps of Mandela, the living icon of South Africa that has, for some decades represented freedom and equality to the human race worldwide.
