Nelson Mandela
These iconic sets are part of the life time story of Mandela known as the
" Life of a Legend: Nelson Mandela" features on the Protea coin series. They were introduced in 2013, and a different chapter of Mr Mandela's life is portrayed annually.
The 2013 set features Mr Mandela's childhood upbringing in Qunu. Nelson Mandela was born on the 18th July 1918 into the Mandela clan. He was named Rolihlahla, which in Xhosa means "pulling the branch of a tree". His father, Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Henry was the chief of Mvezo and a highly respected councillor to the king of the Thembu tribe. His mother, Noqaphi Nosekeni, was one of the chief's wives.
The 2014 set features Mr Mandela's education. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a well-educated man and a great believer in education and life-long learning. He was the first member of his family to attend school, a single room schoolhouse situated in the village of Qunu. On his first day at school his teacher, Ms Mdingane gave him the name 'Nelson'. The sterling silver R1 Protea coin represents Mr Mandela as a child practising writing 'Nelson' on a slate board. Below the child is one of his quotations: "The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow and education is a very important weapon to prepare children for their future roles as leaders of the community.
The 2015 set features Mr Mandela's personal growth. Mr Mandela evolves from an inexperienced youth who had run away from his privileged home with the royal family of the Thembu people to seek his fortune in the City of Gold to a young man who came to rely on his inner strength and abilities.
The 2016 set features Mr Mandela's professional life as an attorney at law. Nelson Mandela achieved his goal of becoming an independent practising attorney when, in August 1952, he and Oliver Tambo became business partners and opened Mandela & Tambo Attorneys in Chancellor House. This was the first African law firm in South Africa and represented clients from all over the country.
