The one-ounce silver coin depicts Nelson Mandela as a proud statesman. After spending 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela was finally released on 11 February 1990 and elected deputy president of the ANC in the same year. In 1993, he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with President FW de Klerk before making history as South Africa’s first democratically-elected president, in 1994.
Reverse of Coin:
Around left on two lines, the anniversary dates 18 JULY 2018 and 18 JULY 1918. Around right on two lines, NELSON MANDELA CENTENARY.
The value and denomination R50 (Fifty Rand) are below left. The mass of the coin and the metal composition, 1 oz Ag 925 Cu 75, are around below right in opposite direction to the other inscription (Ag is abbreviated from Argentum, which means "silver" in Latin and is used internationally on silver bullion coinage; Cu is for copper).
The initials of the die-sinker, PB (for Paul Botes), are inside a grove above Mandela's shoulder and after the Y of CENTENARY. The designer was S Nyoni.
