In continuation of the SA Mint's Natura Series of Numismatic Gold Coins, and as a worthy successor to the Big Five series, the obverse of the 1999 editions portrays the King of the Antelope, the Kudu bull. A Monarch of Africa. 2000 SABLE The Sable antelope (Hippotragus niger) are gregarious animals and live in herds of up to 30 individuals. Each herd is lead by a territorial male. The juvenile males are evicted from the herd at the age of three. They then group to form "bachelor" herds, where they will remain for about 2 to 3 years. After this period they will start challenging the herd bulls to acquire their own breeding herd. The fights are more a display of supremacy, very seldom causing any bodily harm. 2001 ORYX The Gemsbok (Oryx Gazella) antelope ranks amongst the most handsome in Africa with their long rapier-like horns, black and white face patterns. These splendid creatures with their robust and proud bearing are massively built. Gemsbok generally form mixed herds of ten to fifteen animals. The size of the herd is dependent on food availability, which in turn is often dependent on the seasons. They are almost exclusively grazers but will survive by grazing from bushes and eating small herbs if necessary.
