Fights can go on for hours, each of the contenders trying to inflict deep gashes on their opponent with their razor sharp and enormous incisors. There are very few adult hippo bulls without scars. Lone bulls find refuge in their own pools from where they launch their attacks on a herd bull, in an attempt to take over his harem. A territorial fight between two hippo bulls is depicted on the reverse side of this 1 oz gold coin together with the word "Natura" and the denomination "R100". On the obverse side a portrait of a hippo is featured together with the words " South Africa " and the year "2005". 2006 The Giraffe Giraffe are herbivorous browsers. When protected and food is abundant giraffe flourish, surviving well even when water is scarce. They occasionally eat grass and fruits of various trees and shrubs, but their principal food source is the acacia thorn tree. Giraffe have extremely long tongues (45 centimeters) which are covered with thick saliva to assist in pulling twigs and shoots into the mouth where it is held between the lower teeth and the thick hard pad in the upper jaw. Giraffe do not have upper front teeth or incisors but a hard pad where teeth would normally be. The leaves are then stripped off the twigs with a backward pull of the head. Up to 45 kilograms of leaves can be harvested this way to sustain the giraffe's great bulk. The giraffe also has a modified atlas-axis joint that enables the head to reach higher in a vertical position. A browsing giraffe is depicted on the reverse side of the 1 oz 24 carat gold coin together with the word "Natura" and the denomination R100. On the obverse, a portrait of a giraffe is featured together with the words " South Africa " and the year "2006". 2007 The Eland The Eland (Taurotragus oryx) is a browser, utilising a wide diversity of plant species. It can exist for long periods without open water, but is then reliant on fruits like the tsamma melon and the Gemsbok cucumber, to meet its water requirements. A grazing Eland is depicted on the reverse of the 1 oz gold coin together with an example of San rock art, the word "Natura" and the denomination "R100". On the obverse, a portrait of on Eland is featured together with the words " South Africa " and the year "2007". 2008 The Elephant The African Elephant (Loxodonto africana) features on the 2008 pure gold Natura coin series as the last of the "Giants of Africa". This coin series began in 2005 depicting "The Hippopotamus" as the first African giant. The second giant was "The Giraffe" in 2006 and the third in 2007 was "The Eland". The reverse of the R 100 (1 oz) Natura features an elephant on top of a frieze of elephant herd. Elephants consume about 5% of their body weight and drink 30-50 gallons of water per day. They eat an extremely varied vegetarian diet including grass, leaves, twigs, bark, fruit and seed pods. On the obverse a portrait of a matriarch is depicted together with a silhouetted family group. Elephant herds consist of related females with their dependent offspring. The welfare of these family groups depends on the experienced leadership of the matriarch. ------------------------------------------- TO RESERVE Kindly Note: |
