Description:
The pure-gold Natura series was launched in 1994 and depicts the various animals that make up South Africa's wildlife. In celebrating South Africa's numismatic history, the 2017 Natura coin series features the beautifully illustrated springbok designs that were created by the South African sculptor Coert Steynberg (7 January 1905 - 28 July 1982) in the year 1946. The designs were the conceptual drawings for the 1947 5 shilling coin. A new addition to the Natura series, a 1/20 oz coin, was made available from 2017. As the national animal of South Africa, the Springbok is
distinguished from other antelopes by its striking body colouring.
Among the works by Coert Steynberg, whose work is presented both nationally and internationally, are the Statue of Paul Kruger found at the Kruger National Park entrance gate as well as the reverse design of the springbok on the world famous Krugerrand, minted for the first time on the 3 July 1967.
Each of the coins represents different sketches on the reverse together with the words "Natura", "Coert Steynberg" the year "1947-2017", the denomination and hallmark of the coin. The common obverse features a detail of one of the illustrations together with the words "South Africa" and the year "2017"
