Description : Coelophysis is one of the earliest known dinosaurs to have a wishbone, just like a chicken Coelophysis was a lightweight hunter that looked like a long-legged bird. Fossil evidence suggests that this dinosaur ate small crocodile-like reptiles.
The Karoo supergroup of South Africa is one of the geological wonders of the world. This 12 Km thick layer of sedimentary rock was set down over a period of almost 120 million years when South Africa was still part of southern Gondwanaland.
Herbivorous Archosauriforms evolved at the end of the Triassic Period, finally taking over the last enclaves of synapsid domination. The next step of evolution, which saw the rise of the dinosaurs, crocodiles and pterosaurs, was imminent.
The obverse of the 1oz gold coin features the words 'Rise of the dinosaurs', 'Archosauria' and the year 2018 written in roman numerals 'MMXVIII'. Also shown is the fossilised skull, neck and shoulder of an Erythrosuchus africanas.
The privy mark R100 features the Coelophysids which were highly successful primitive theropod dinosaurs that occured worldwide from the late Triassic to the early Jurassic Period. Coelophysis rhodesiensis, a small, agile dinosaur which preyed on small animals, occurred in South Africa and Zimbabwe during the early part of the Jurassic period. The slender bipedal dinosaur grew up to 3 m long and weighed about 32kg. The privy mark on the reverse features two prints of the Coelophysis rhodesiensis. ____________________
