Description :
The common obverse of the coins features the Taung Child because of its historic and scientific importance. This was the first fossil hominin known in the world. This fossil was the single most important discovery in palaeoanthropology and one which has irrevocably changed our view of human evolution.

The skull was discovered by a mine worker known only as Mr De Bruyn at Norlim Mine at Buxton in the North West Province. It was sent to Professor Raymond Dart from the University of the Witwatersrand who described it as an 'ape-man' with a mixture of apelike and human-like characteristics, and that it was the 'missing link' connecting humans to chimpanzees. He named the species Australopithicus africanus. Raymond Dart and Robert Broom  used the term 'ape-man' to refer to pre-Homo hominins. They used the term in the same vein as the older Greek term 'pithicanthrope'. In time it was replaceD by the tongue-twister 'australopithecine', which unfortunately excludes other pre-Homo hominins, but includes the Genres Sahelanthropus, Ardipithicus and Paranthropus.

Before this discovery, it was assumed by most palaeontologists that humans originated in Eurasia, based on discoveries of Homo neanderthalensis and Homo heidelbergensis from Germany, Homo erectus from China and Java, and the forgery known as 'Piltdown Man' from England.

The discovery of the Taung Child stunned the world and changed the face of palaeoanthropolgy, as it represents the most primitive part of the family tree of humankind, linking humans to the ancestry we share with the chimpanzees. This discovery proved Charles Darwin's prophecy that the fossils of the ancestors of humankind would be found in Africa to be correct.

Of the thousands of hominin fossils discovered in South Africa, five distinct fossil species have been identified. These are Australopithecus africanus, Paranthropus robustus, Homo Ergaster, Homo heidelbergensis and Homo sapiens, while there is still some disagreement about the validity of Australopithecus sediba and Homo naledi. These five distinct species are shown on the reverse of the different coins.

The hominin species of South Africa span a period of approximately three million years  and include several hominid species - from apemen to primitive humans to the first true human beings - in conjunction with some of the oldest stone tools. The first evidence of the use of fire and art rightfully earned South Africa the title of the 'Cradle of Humankind'. The term 'primitive human' refers to members of the Homo genus that do not belong to Homo sapiens.

This series brings tribute to the distinction that South Africa has the best preserved heritage of the origin of humankind. Every coin is a miniature ambassador that tells the story of the origin of humans and South Africa as the Birthplace of Humankind.
