In the 1990’s the coins depicted important themes such as conservation, gold mining,· tourism in South Africa , etc. From the mid-2000s, this series started depicting real life stories centred on· democracy in South Africa . Nobel Laureates such as Albert Luthuli, Bishop Desmond Tutu, FW de Klerk and Nelson Mandela were featured, followed by literature Nobel prize winners Naidene Gordimer, JM Coetzee.
