1998 and "Zulu" theme in 1999, the cultural R1 gold coin 2000 pays respect to the "Xhosa" nation. A Xhosa man smoking the traditional pipe, together with a woman and child,
are portrayed on the reverse of the 24 carat gold coin. The Xhosa people, descendants from the Nguni people, live primarily in the Eastern Cape area called the Ciskei and Transkei.
Traditionally they were cattle farmers and breeders, living in scattered homelands ruled by the chiefs. Their language, Xhosa, is also known as the "click "language. The 2000 cultural
coin is the first coin to be minted with the new coat of arms
