Description: LITTLE FOOT
In 1994 while searching through museum boxes labelled 'Cercopithecoids' containing fossil fragments, paleoanthropologist Ronald J. Clarke identified several that were unmistakably hominin. He spotted four left foot bones (the talus, navicular, medial cuneiform and first metatarsal) that were most likely from the same individual. These fragments came from the Silberberg Grotto, a large cavern within the Sterkfontein cave system. They were described as belonging to the genus Australopithecus, and catalogued as Stw 573.
Description: GONDWANA
The Palaeontological series started in 1997 when the discovery of "Mrs Ples" was commemorated. The living fossil - The Coelacanth appeared on the 1998 coin and a Thrixadon fossil, as an example of a mammal-reptile from the Karoo, was issued in 1999. The discovery of "Little Foot" was portrayed on the 2000 coin.
The theme for the 5th coin in this exciting series is the Gondwana Drift. The coin shows the start of the continental drift of Gondwana, the Pre-historic land mass approximately 200 million years ago.
