DESCRIPTION:

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE PATTERN

The Cape of Good Hope Arms on the reverse depicts on a plain shield, a lion rampant between the three annulets, in three roundels each charged with a fleur de lis. The crest features a seated female figure of Hope with a lamb and an anchor at her feet. The shield supported by two mythological antelope ( supposed to be a black wildebeest left and a gemsbok on the right ). Below on a ribbon intertwined with laurel sprays is the motto Spes Bona.

The pattern piece above is of the "Long Horn Type", where the horns of the right hand antelope protrude deep into the legend between the D & H and the head of Hope is between the G and the O in the inscription.
