50C AFRIKAANS LEGEND
In order to establish the new coins for the Republic of South Africa, the finality of the coins was reached on the 30th April 1965 when the Proclamation No.90 of 1965 was published in the Government Gazette. It illustrated the designs of the new coins and stated that these designs would come into effect from 11 May 1965. On the 3rd December 1964, a ceremony was held at the South African Mint to mark the official striking of the first of South Africa's new coinage series by the then Minister of Finance, Dr T.E.Donges.
In a letter from Gert Malan, to the Secretary of the Treasury (1964), Gert proposed two solutions to ensure that both languages were accommodated. The first was to use alternative languages on the coins, eg, 50c would be struck with "Suid Afrika", 20c would be struck with "South Africa, etc. and the second option was to manufacture two complete sets of coins in each of the languages. The mint strongly supported the second option as it would be fairer towards the different language groups. They also felt that this option would double the number of proof sets sold. This proposal was accepted, but alternating languages were nevertheless used in the proof sets manufactured during each year. This decision made some of the 1965 coins very rare.
