50c 1965 ENGLISH
Documents found in the National Archives of South Africa indicated that the Proclamation approved the designs for the new coins. Based on this Proclamation the most likely reason for the minting of the 1965 English 50c coin was for the purposes of proclaiming the design.
As with the 1965 50c English coin, no Afrikaans language R1 coins were required for the 1965 proof sets or for circulation ( the first circulation coins, dated 1966, were only released to the public during March 1966). A total of 120 of these coins were struck and they are mostly in the so-called VIP proof sets. On the 3rd December 1964, a ceremony was held at the South African Mint to mark the official striking of the first of South Africa's new coinage series by the then Minister of Finance, Dr T.E.Donges.
