Description:

Two solutions to the bilingual representation of English and Afrikaans on the coins were suggested to the then Secretary of Treasury. The first was to use alternative languages on the coins, e.g. 50c - Suid Afrika, 20c - South Africa, etc. The second option was to manufacture two complete sets of coins in each of the languages. The mint strongly supported the second option as it would

be fairer towards the different language groups.

If one were to compare the R1 nickel to the R1 silver coin, one would see that the designs were identical, but the R 1 nickel coin was slightly smaller with a diameter of 31 mm compared to the 32.7 mm of the silver coin. Owing to the ever increasing price of silver, the silver R1 coin was not struck for circulation purposes after 1976. The small brown R1 note was issued instead. The lifespan of this note in circulation was very short lived, and in 1977 a decision was made to replace it with a nickel R1 coin. Source: History of the Nickel coins of South Africa.
