R1 1966 ENGLISH LEGEND

As with the 1965 50c English coin, no Afrikaans language R1 coins were required for the 1965 proof sets or for circulation ( the first circulation coins, dated 1966, were only released to the public during March 1966). A total of 120 of these coins were struck and they are mostly in the so called VIP proof sets. On the 3rd December 1964, a ceremony was held at the South African Mint to mark the official striking of the first of South Africa's new coinage series by the then Minister of Finance, Dr T.E.Donges. 

Only one language legend proof coins were officially issued by the South African Mint. The opposite language coins do exist in prooflike condition from 1966 to 1969. Often these coins were struck by the families of the Presidents at special ceremonies at the mint. No official mintage figures exist for these coins, but the number is very small and therefore very rare.
