The enterance of the South African Royal Mint Building, which was used as the theme for the commemorative silver R1 coin of 1974. The Proclamation No 101 in the Government Gazette of 24 May 1974 (no 4282) announced the alteration of the reverse design of the coin from the Springbok, to a design to commemorate 50 years of coining in South Africa. the coin was apparently planned to be struck in 1973, but was delayed to coincide with the visit of the delegates of the 5th Numismatic Convention to the Mint in April 1974. Three dates appear on the coin namely 1923, 1973 and 1974 (on the obverse).
