Details:

R 1 Weight: 12 grams Diameter: 31.0 mm Metal Content: Nickel Fine

 MINTAGE: PROOF UNKNOWN

Description:

If one were to compare the R1 nickel to the R1 silver coin, one would see that the designs were identical, but the R 1 nickel coin was slightly smaller with a diameter of 31 mm compared to the 32.7 mm of the silver coin. Owing to the ever increasing price of silver, the silver R1 coin was not struck for circulation purposes after 1976. The small brown R1 note was issued instead. The lifespan of this note in circulation was very short lived, and in 1977 a decision was made to replace it with a nickel R1 coin. Source: History of the Nickel coins of South Africa.
