old Coat of Arms of the country and was the national symbol until
recently, when the new Coat of Arms was introduced on the 27th of April 2000,
Freedom Day. During the design of the new coin series 1964,
it was therefore considered appropriate to use this symbol
for the prestigious R1 coin. The emblem was already well known on the
coins as it appeared on the 5 Shilling pieces since 1947
