A possible theory behind the elusiveness in finding these
OOM PAUL "CW" Mintmark R5 coins may be as follows:
The majority of coins were sold to individual visitors to the S A Mint who bought a R5 "CW" coin as a souvenir and subsequently these coins are probably in cupboards and drawers all over the world. An assumption could be that posssibly 75% of the total mintage got sold this way.
Therefore an estimate may be that the remaining mintage of only 25% would have became available to numismatic collectors, making them a rare item in the world of numismatic coin collecting,
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The year 2000 revealed great numismatic issues.
The R5 was first issued with the old Coat of Arms. During December 2000 a new Coat of Arms was introduced, a Nelson Mandela coin was issued and the "CW" mintmark appeared on the proof R5 coins struck on "Oom Paul" in Coin World at the South African Mint
Four different coins were therefore minted in 2000. Such an occurence is rare and is unlikely to be repeated.
