The sterling silver coin series portrays South Africa's rich marine heritage. Both the R2 "crown" and the 2½ cent 'tickey' were introduced in the 1990's, this time as collectors coins. 

The Marine Life coin for 2000 portrays the placid octopus. It is known as the common octopus (Octopus granulatus) and is found all around the South African coastline.

The octopus, part of the class cephalopoda, signifies the peak of molluscan evolution and is one of the most sophisticated invertebrates. It has a complex nervous system, is capable of learning, and has finely tuned sensory organs - a truly fascinating creature.
