Description:
These limited edition Birds of Prey sterling silver sets consist of a R2 silver coin, a 2½c tickey coin and a sterling silver charm. South Africa's first silver crown size coin was issued in 1892 with "5 shillings" as the denomination. Commemorating the visit by the Royal family, the CROWN coins were issued again in 1947. Crowns were issued as circulation and collector's coins until 1964. The denomination "5 shillings" was changed to 50c when South Africa decimalised in 1961. In 1992 the Silver CROWN was introduced again, this time as a collectors coin, minted in proof quality. The denomination "R2" appears on the modern version of the coin. In 1997 the crown became part of a new theme depicting South Africa's marine life. Tickeys were issued from 1923 - 1964 as circulation coins in South Africa Due to decimalisation, the tickey from 1961- 1964 had the denomination "2½c". In 1997, the popular silver tickey was reintroduced as a collectors' coin in proof quality as part of the new Marine Series with the R2 silver crown size coin. In 2003 the theme South African Birds of Prey was intro duced to the market.
