Description:
The Name "Meerkat" is the Afrikaans version of the English name, Marsh Cat. However, Meerkats do not live near marshes and they are not cats, but rather a type of Mongoose. they are found in the southern parts of Africa, which is dominated by the Kalahari Desert. Their specific scientific name is Suricata suricatta. A typical Meerkat diet consists of worms, crickets, grasshoppers, small rodents, lizards, small snakes, birds, eggs, fruit, and larvae as well as poisonous scorpions and seem to be resistant to many deadly types of venom.

Is an interesting name given to this project with the array dishes gathering information, as meerkats, in a group would do, standing on their hind legs, in alert.
You can also go to the related link below - to see what is currently happening with South Africa's involvement with the SKA, the Square Kilometre Array, which is a global science and engineering project.
After nine-years of work by the South African and Australian SKA site bid teams, the independent SKA Site Advisory Committee (SSAC), composed of world-renowned experts, carried out an objective technical and scientific assessment of the sites in South Africa and Australia and identified by consensus Africa as the preferred site. About 70-80% of the project will be based in South Africa and other African countries, the balance will be in Australia
