Description:
The U N E S C O Man and the Biosphere programme has changed the way we interact with nature. In celebration of the rich diversity of the Kogelberg Biosphere, the South African Mint has, for the first time, launched a new colour range to showcase its staggering beauty. The range contains four sterling-silver 1oz crowns: two depicting the flora and two depicting the bird life of the unique U N E S C O Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.
2016 R 5 Blue-bearded Disa
The first coin in the 2016 colour crown R5 coin series features a beautiful flowering Blue-bearded Disa. The Red List of South African plants lists this orchid as 'vulnerable'. The population is on the decline due to the development of coastal areas, the invasion of alien plant species and the lack of fire, as the plant only flowers in response to fire. A waterfall, the scientific name, the denomination of R5, and the details are shown.
2016 R 5 Hermanus Cliff Gladiolus
The second crown features the Hermanus Cliff Gladiolus. It is recorded as 'vulnerable' in SANBI's Red List of South African plants. This unique plant carries up to six deep-pink unscented flowers, with only one flower opening at a time. Featured in the background of the coin are its habitat of rocky sandstone outcrops and cliffs. The scientific name, the denomination of R5 and the metal value are details given.
2017 R 5 The Yellow Wine Cup
The yellow wine cup, which blooms in early spring, has deep creamy-yellow cups with dark red-brown centres. The flowers only open fully on hot, still days and are native to the seasonally wet flats of Darling in the Western Cape. This R5 coin depicts the yellow wine cup against the background of the renosterveld; along with its scientific name ‘Geissorhiza darlingensis’, the denomination ‘R5’, and the metal value ‘1 oz Ag 925 Cu 75’.
2017 R 5 The Mature Starfish Lily
The Mature Startfish Lily, an alien-looking flower with its frilly edges, could easily be mistaken for an exotic sea creature. The fully opened creamy white flowers with brown ruffled edges and chocolate-brown to deep purple spots, highlighted with striking orange anthers. The plant has fleshy sword-like leaves and the flowers have a sweet aroma that reminds vaguely of vanilla. The reverse of this R5 coin features this flower of the Western Strandveld biome, along with its scientific name ‘Ferraria Crispa’ , the denomination ‘R5’, and the metal value ‘1 oz Ag 925 Cu 75’.
2018 R 5 The Grass Crinum
Larger in stature than most other species of Amaryllidaceae family . The name Crinum originates from the Greek Krinon, which means lily. Crinum graminicola are herbaceous plants with large bulbs which produce a neck made made up of the sheathing bases of the old leaves. This deciduous summer-growing bulb has a stem of approximately 45cm which hold the umbrella like flowers. Crinum graminicola are native to the grassy plains of the highveld of South Africa.
2018 R 5 The Orange Tritonia
Tritonia nelsonii, commonly known as orange tritonia, is a delicate geophyte in the Iridaceae family. The genus name is derived from the Latin word triton, meaning 'weathervane', and alludes to the apparently random arrangement of the stamens in some species. The orange tritonia is slender and grass-like, reaching a height of approximately 500mm. The beautiful funnel-shaped petals are almost translucent and delicately veined. Tritonia nelsonii occures in the grasslands and the rocky outcrops with the orange flowers being quite noticeable during its summer flowering time, among the grasses where it generally occurs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
