   2 1/2 CTickey

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT THE MINTMARKED TICKEY HAS BEEN PRODUCED AND PRESENTED WITH A CERTIFICATE

South African Inventions' is the new theme of the sterling silver R2 Crown and the 2 1/2 cent tickey, and features the dolosse. Developed in the Eastern Cape in 1963 to protect harbour walls and dissipate the energy of breaking waves, their design ensures that they form an interlocking yet porous wall.

They are placed in position and on top of each other by cranes, and over time tend to get further entangled as they are shifted by the waves of the ocean. Roughly 10 000 dolosse are required to preserve a kilometer of coastline with one weighing up to 30 tonnes.

Details:

2 1/2 cent Tickey  Metal: Sterling Silver  Mass: 1.414 grams  Diameter: 16.30 mm

-------------------------------------------

Description:

The reverse of the 2 1/2cent tickey shows a single dolos with the denomination 2 1/2 cent, while the obverse features the words 'South Africa' with the year 2016 and a Protea.

Eric Mowbray Merrifield, an East London harbour engineer from 1961 to 1967, is credited with the invention of the dolos, but in the late 1990's Aubery Kruger, Merrifield's young draughtsman, claimed he and Merrifield considered the shape of the concrete blocks together to be used in the protection of East London's extensive breakwaters following damage done by a storm in 1963. Merrifield died in 1982 and Kruger's claim cannot be settled either way. source: S A Mint
