INFO:
A new theme 'Celebrating South Africa' was introduced in 2017. This series consists of a 1 oz pure gold R 500 proof coin (not in this promo), a 1 oz sterling silver R 50 proof coin, a base metal (Aluminium-bronze) R 50 non-circulating legal tender coin and a R 5 commemorative circulation coin.
The year 2017 celebrated the centenary of the birth of Oliver Reginald Tambo. 'Comrade O R', as he was affectionately known, was born on 27 October 1917 in the small village of Nkantolo in the Eastern Cape. Oliver Tambo was a founding member and secretary of the African National Congress Youth League
(A N C Y L) from 1944 to 1948. He then moved to the National Executive Committee (N E C) and was part of the team that drafted the "Programme of Action". He was the General Secretary of the A N C from 1955 to 1958, Deputy President from 1958 to 1967, acting President from 1967 to 1969 and President from 1969 to 1991. He was the National Chairperson of the A N C from 1990 until his death on 24 April 1993.
Although 'Comrade O R' died a year before the first democratic elections took place in South Africa on the 27 April 1994, and although he did not get to experience the free and democratic South Africa, his legacy lives on.
This set consists of the 1 oz sterling silver R 50 proof coin, the base metal R 50 non-circulating legal tender coinage the R 5 commemorative circulation coin. The reverse of the sterling silver coin features a stylised interpretation of Oliver Tambo as a young man together with his full name 'Oliver Reginald Tambo', date of the centenary '1917-2017', the denomination 'R 50' and the metal value '1 oz Ag 925 Cu 75'
The obverse of the coin depicts the national coat of arms, year of issue '2017', and the words 'South Africa' written in all the official languages.
The R 5 proof circulation coin features the Order of Companions of O R Tambo (Order) that was named in honour of Oliver Reginald Tambo.
This Order is awarded in three classes, namely gold, silver and bronze, to foreign heads of state and other eminent foreign persons for friendship to South Africa.
The reverse illustrates the neck badge as well as the walking stick. Symbols reflected in the Order include the Majola or mole snake that implies friendship, protection and active support in African Mythology. The walking stick signifies support and commitment; and the universal yin and yang symbol suggests a meeting point for diverse spiritual energies.
The obverse depicts the national coat of arms, year of issue '2017', and 'South Africa' written in both English and Xitsonga.
It was the first time that the South African Mint company released a non-circulating, collectable legal tender R 50 coin. The coin is manufactured from base metal similar to other South African circulation coins, yet it is non-circulating as it is not redeemable at banks or for use to purchase products or services at face value.
This coin is collectable as it has been manufactured in a limited quantity. The design has gone through the same approval process as other legal tender commemorative coins and has been approved by the Cabinet and the Minister of Finance, which makes it legal tender that can be redeemed at the South African Mint Company for its face value of R 50.
The reverse of the non-circulating legal tender coin features a stylised interpretation of Oliver Tambo together with his full name 'Oliver Reginald Tambo', the date of the centenary '1917 - 2017' as well as the denomination 'R 50' and the metal value 'Cu Al Ni'. The obverse of the coin depicts the national coat of arms, the year of issue '2017', and the words 'South Africa' written in all the official languages.
