Description:
The reverse of the R500 pure-gold coin depicts the main entrance of South Africa’s highest court, the Constitutional Court, which endorses the rights of all citizens. The Court is situated in Johannesburg on Constitution Hill, which is a living museum with a rich history of telling the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy.
Designed by architect Shaun Gaylard, the coin’s reverse is inspired by the interaction between the building, its inhabitants and its visitors.
25 years of constitutional democracy in South Africa. Made from a bronze alloy, the R50 collector’s coin bears two hands and fingers intertwined as a symbol of unity between the people of our nation. The phrase “We the people” has become a commonly known global phrase, extolling democracy, the establishment of justice and the striving for an ethos of equality.
This coin was designed by artist Peter Mammes who wanted to depict the ethnicity, diversity and an ethos of equality of the people of the nation. His creation engenders a sense of ‘ubuntu’ and celebrates our togetherness as a people.
The sterling silver R50 coin is characterised by a number of people standing in single file, as if advancing toward a common purpose and goal. The snake-like qualities of the queue of people running into the distance was the primary motivation for the design by Lady Skollie (Laura Windvogel) who drew inspiration from khoisan rock paintings and the element of waiting for a better tomorrow (in a queue).The design featured on this coin represents the great strides made in our nation in 25 years of constitutional democracy including, inter alia, race and gender transformation objectives. With our constitution today, we are all equal before the law and no one can be discriminated against on the basis of race, culture, language, gender, sexual orientation, religion or any other grounds.
Artist Lady Skollie’s design portrays the famous images of voting polling stations in 1994 when the nation attained its independence.
The five new 2019 R2 base metal coins in the set represent the freedoms and rights of the people of South Africa. The right to education, environmental rights, children's rights, freedom of movement and residence and freedom of religion, belief and opinion.
