HISTORICAL EVENTS AT THE TIME UNION COINAGE WAS IN USE
Could this coin possibly have passed the hands of the Earl of Clarendon as he managed the Affairs of the Union of South Africa in his appointment as Governor-General? In 1931 George Herbert Hyde Villiers, the 6th Earl of Clarendon was appointed Governor-General of South Africa, in which position he remained until 1937. During his tenure as Governor-General of South Africa, he also served as Chief Scout of South Africa . Clarendon High School for Girls and its associated schools, Clarendon Primary School and Clarendon Preparatory School in East London , South Africa are named after him. Clarendon was later Lord Chamberlain of the Household between 1938 and 1952. He was sworn of the Privy Council in 1931 and made a Knight of the Garter in 1937.
Important changes to the coinage of the Union of South Africa, due to political events were made, such as the division and independence of India, the word "Imperator" was omitted in 1948 from the royal title on South African coins. In 1925, the reverse depiction on the 6d 3d coins was changed. In 1931, the language change of "Zuid-" to "Suid-" was made on all the coinage of the Union of South Africa, as can be seen on the 2½ Shilling above.
Up to 1960, South Africa used the British system of 12 pennies to a shilling and 20 shillings to a pound (240 pennies to the pound). this coinage system dominated South Africa for more than a century as Lord Charles Somerset issued an ordinance as far back as 6 June 1825 declaring British Sterling as legal tender at the Cape (Arndt, 1928). This was part of a process to introduce a uniform monetary system for the British Colonies at the time. A shortage of coins nevertheless delayed this process for several years, but after 1848, only coins of the Sterling series were accepted. These coins became firmly entrenched throughout the whole of South Africa and even the Kruger coins, minted in the Transvaal Republic during 1892 to 1900, conformed to the British system (Engelbrecht, 1987).Source: Francois Malan
