In 1947, the British royal family of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, embarked on an extensive six-month royal tour of South Africa. This tour, scheduled shortly after the Second World War, was not without political significance on both international and domestic levels.
Summary. On May 31, 1910, four colonies were joined together to create the Union of South Africa, a self-governing Dominion in the British Empire. While the new nation was sovereign when it came to its domestic affairs, the United Kingdom maintained control over its relations with the wider world.
